Swapping your Shampoo and Conditioner

Your shower should be the time that you get to relax and unwind, NOT a time where you are worrying about covering your entire body with harmful toxins hidden in your shampoo and conditioner. So let's break down what you need to know about the ingredients in your shampoo and concditioner so you can have the cleanest shower of your life!

When you use a store bought shampoo and conditioner or even a higher end shampoo and conditioner from your hair salon, you are most likely exposing yourself to a whole host of harmful chemicals, including carcinogens and hormone disruptors. The worst offenders to watch out for are the 5 Ps.

What are the 5 Ps?

  1. Parfum/Fragrance - (may be also seen as “natural fragrance” or “aroma”), usually contains a group of chemicals called phthalates, which are known hormone disruptors and are also linked to cancer

  2. Parabens - (may be seen as “propylparaben,” “methylparaben,” “butylparaben,” or “ethylparaben”) a group of chemicals linked to cancer

  3. PEGs - (may be see as “polyethylene glycol,” or as “PEG” with other chemicals or numbers after it) a group of chemicals that are made by the process of ethoxylation and are often contaminated with the carcinogens ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane

  4. PPGs - (may be seen as “polypropylene glycol” or as “PPG” with other chemicals or numbers after it) a group of chemicals that are made by the process of ethoxylation and are often contaminated with the carcinogens ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane

  5. Phenoxyethanol - a chemical that Is made by the process of ethoxylation and is often contaminated with the carcinogens ethylene oxide and 1,4 dioxane

Some shampoos I would avoid:

  • Pantene

  • Head and Shoulders

  • RedKen

**just to name a few but please read your labels to look out for the 5Ps and avoid any brand with those which unfortunately is most brands sitting on store shelves.**

You also want to look for brands that prioritize organic ingredients. My top 3 favorite shampoo + conditioners that are toxin free and use organic ingredients are listed below:

If you want to learn more about how to switch your haircare or other beauty and personal care products as well as have a full list of ingredients on hand to watch out for, please check out my OrganiBeauty Guide for even more information on swaps for all your everyday products!

Lastly, I love giving you safer swaps but never want to put an unneccsary burden on you to make a switch if it is not in the budget right now! So as always, do your best and let go of the rest!
