Tips for Low Tox Travel

It’s the season for spring break, planning summer travels, and finally venturing out of your home after the long winter months. We JUST got back from a 4-day trip to Los Angeles (from our home in Indianapolis) and I’ve got ALL the low-tox travel tips for you!!

What I pack for air travel trips (other than clothes):

Active skin repair (the BEST skin spray for all skin things - also works as a mild sanitizer)

Briotech spray - slightly stronger toxin free sanitizer - great for wiping plane seats

Various Boiron homeopathy remedies (ColdCalm + Oscillococcinum)

Silicone food storage bags (good for carrying leftovers while traveling, or even sticking wet or dirty clothes into)

Saline Nasal spray (for if we are exposed to mold) - use with RO or distilled water

Healthy snacks

FOR MY KIDS:

Lightweight car seats without flame retardants (Maxi Cosi Romi and Maxi Cosi Pria)

Low tox stroller and stroller bag (Guava Roam)

iPad on airplane mode

Low emf wired headphones for toddler (these are currently sold out but we have DefenderShield!) wired headphones are always better for kids vs bluetooth)

Books

Organic snacks (Chomps, Skout Organics bars, Once Upon a Farm puffs and yogurt melts)

AIR TRAVEL TIPS

Avoid walking through the 5G millimeter scanners, which expose you to a lot of EMF radiation. All passengers have the right to ask for a pat down instead, or, if you have TSA Pre-Check, you will usually get to walk through a metal detector instead (no radiation).

Planes are inevitably super high in EMF. Some of the best ways to mitigate exposure is to wait to board for as long as possible, and to sit close to the back of the plane (the cockpit usually contains a WiFi router). Aisle seats generally test lower for EMF than window seats, but don’t stress over this if you can’t control it.

Plan to be offline during your flight. Connecting to the plane’s WiFi will significantly increase your EMF exposure, as will the use of Bluetooth. Use wired headphones, and download any content you plan to watch or listen to ahead of time. Or, bring a book, a craft project, or take a nap!

If traveling with a breastfed child, nursing during takeoff and landing can help soothe their ears during pressure changes!

Baby carriers can be super helpful while getting on and off the plane, but note that they cannot be worn during takeoff and landing.

If traveling with a young child who eats solids, pack a silicone bib! We stuck this one on our 12 month old while sitting in his stroller and fed him some shredded chicken from an airport restaurant which meant almost no mess.

As I always say, do your best and let go of the rest. There’s a lot about traveling that is completely out of your control, and that’s okay :)

Do you use an emf blanket while on the flight? Thanks!
